What Happens if My Child Turns 18 but my Ex Still Owes Child Support?

Sharing is caring:

Here’s a concise overview of what happens in this situation in Missouri:

  1. Child support obligations typically end when a child turns 18 in Missouri.
  2. However, there are exceptions:
    • If the child is still in high school, support may continue until graduation or age 21, whichever comes first.
    • If the child has a disability, support may continue indefinitely.
  3. Any unpaid child support (arrears) from before the child turned 18 remains owed.
  4. The custodial parent can still pursue collection of these arrears through various means, including:
    • Wage garnishment
    • Property liens
    • Interception of tax refunds
