Can I Get My Child Support Changed If I Lose My Job

Sharing is caring:

If you lose your job in Missouri, you may be eligible to have your child support order modified. Here’s a brief overview:

  1. Missouri allows for child support modifications when there’s a substantial change in circumstances.
  2. Job loss can be considered a substantial change, especially if it significantly impacts your income.
  3. To request a modification:
    • File a motion with the court that issued your original order
    • Provide evidence of your job loss and financial situation
  4. The court will review your case and may adjust the support amount based on your new circumstances.
  5. Keep in mind that voluntarily quitting a job may be viewed differently than an involuntary job loss.
  6. Continue paying your current support amount until a new order is issued.

It’s important to act promptly if you lose your job, as modifications typically aren’t retroactive.
